Search Engine Ranking

There's a pervasive myth among Web site managers that submitting your Web site to hundreds of search engines will result in thousands of new visitors. That's just not true.

With millions of Web sites available to people on the World Wide Web, you can also expect millions of URL's to be listed on various search engines. That can make it tough to get your listing seen, especially if you haven't created your site with promotion in mind.

When someone queries a search engine for a keyword related to your site's products or services. As there are thousands of sites related to the keyword, by default search engines only 10 of them are displayed at a time, and to view the next 10 site click on a link at the bottom of the page and wait for the entire page to load all over again.

Most net surfers choose a site from the first 10 listing based on the most appealing title presented to him. If he is not satisfied with the search result he may look at the second, and maybe even a third result page. If he is unsatisfied with the search results, he may likely to conduct a new search with some other search engine.

Getting listed within the top 10 sites is essential for getting steady traffic from search engines and directories. And it can usually be accomplished through designing your pages with the right things in mind.

A top 10 ranking in a major search engine like AltaVista, Yahoo, HotBot or Lycos will often generate more targeted traffic than an expensive banner advertising campaign - and, a good search engine position is like highly targeted advertising that is both FREE, and effective!

You may or may not be able to get a high ranking in the search engines. It will be especially difficult if you have a website with a very common market, because there are so many other websites competing for the same thing. For example, if you do a search for the word 'computers', you will be competing with tens of millions of other sites for high ranking, and surely hundreds of thousands have well designed sites with meta tags and the such, so you may not be very lucky.

If you have an uncommon market, and the keywords someone might use don't receive too many results, you have a better chance.

You should start by designing a website that is very content-rich. You should have lots of links and lots of text. The text should be very relevant to the subject that you want people to search for. Your text should be very descriptive. If you are going to use product logos, be sure to also have the names in simple text on the pages. You should make sure the titles of your pages contain the words that you want people to search for. Make your website very informative. Don't use small text or hidden text. The search engines will catch these things and think you are trying to trick them. Don't use the same keywords over and over. This will be caught as well. Submit to as many sites as possible as some of the engines will give you a better rank if they have lots of other sites in their database with links to your site. Lastly, be patient. It can take months and months to get on some of the engines.
